I used this real estate agent for the first time. Communication was excellent and smooth from the start. The agents are friendly and, in my opinion, knowledgeable. It's a young company, and they're passionate about their work. They quickly found me a good tenant, and everything went smoothly and professionally at check-in – Waterlooplein 21 C

Ode to the Vondelkerk
Heritage
8 January 2026
The Vondelkerk is an Amsterdam monument with a rich history. For years, in the heart of Amsterdam, on Vondelstraat and just a stone's throw from Vondelpark, stood one of the city's most distinctive churches: the Vondelkerk. With its tall tower, neo-Gothic windows, and refined brickwork, the church was not only a striking sight but also a recognizable haven in the bustling cityscape. The church is named after Joost van den Vondel, poet, playwright, and namesake of the famous park next to it. But it is above all the architect's work that made it a true monument.
The work of a master: Pierre Cuypers
The Vondelkerk was designed by Pierre Cuypers, the grandmaster of the Neo-Gothic style in the Netherlands. Cuypers is best known for the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Centraal Station, but the Vondelkerk was one of his first projects in Amsterdam. Construction began in 1872 and was completed in 1880. The design was strikingly slender and vertical, with a powerful tower reaching for the heavens. Inside, rich woodwork, high vaults, and a beautiful play of light through the stained-glass windows were found. The architecture exuded ambition and spirituality, entirely in keeping with the style of his time.
From church to culture
In 1977, the Vondelkerk ceased to be used as a place of worship. But the building was given a new lease on life. Instead of religious services, the church became the venue for weddings, concerts, exhibitions, and corporate events. The building's atmosphere remained, but its function changed over time. The acoustics, light, and ambiance of the space made it a beloved place for creatives, visitors, and brides and grooms. Thus, the Vondelkerk became not only a monument to the past but also a stage for the present.
A place full of meaning
For many, the Vondelkerk symbolized the Amsterdam we love: characterful, unique, with a rich history and an open mind toward the future. Local residents passed by it daily. Some had gotten married there, others had played music there or sat in silence. The value of such a place lies not just in its brickwork or architecture, but in its memories. In the role it served for so many years: as a backdrop for life.
The fire on New Year's Eve
During the night of December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026, a fire broke out in the Vondelkerk. Around 12:50 a.m., the first flames appeared from the roof. Firefighters responded with heavy equipment, but the fire quickly spread. The roof and the iconic tower eventually collapsed.
Fortunately, no one was injured, but the damage to the building is extensive. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. What is certain is that the city woke up on New Year's Day to the loss of a remarkable piece of history.
An ode to the Vondelkerk, a monument with a past, meaning and a place in the hearts of many.
